STOP 'RECKLESS' STRIKES AS NHS FIGHTS SUPER FLU

Health Secretary urges junior doctors to focus on tackling winter 'worst case scenario'
DOCTORS are under mounting pressure to abandon their “reckless” strikes as the NHS faces a “worst-case scenario” with rocketing flu cases.
The number of patients in hospital with so-called “super flu” soared to 2,660 last week — up 55% in a week and the highest figure recorded for this time of year.It comes as Health Secretary Wes Streeting has warned: “A tsunami of flu is hitting the NHS, we can’t afford the BMA’s attempt to bring down our flood defences.”
Writing in today’s Daily Express, he added: “This intense pressure makes the British Medical Association’s decision to keep the threat of Christmas strikes hanging over the NHS even more damaging.”
Appealing directly to the union members who are being consulted on the government's latest offer, Mr Streeting said: “To doctors considering the offer: vote YES for the good of your patients, your colleagues and your own career.”
Members of the BMA are due to walk out from 7am on December 17 in their latest round of industrial action over pay.
But NHS leaders have called for “all hands on deck” as they warned the service is “in the thick of a storm come early”.
Pharmacists have also described a shortage of flu vaccines at some locations, which means some vulnerable people will have to wait “a little longer than usual”.
Sir Keir Starmer said yesterday: “It would be irresponsible of the BMA to push through.
“And for many resident doctors, in their heart of hearts, they probably don’t want to do this.
“I would just say to the BMA, do the responsible thing, accept the offer that is on the table.” The Prime Minister’s spokesperson described the strikes as “needless and reckless”.
