19 in hospital as tourists struck down by bug after meal
THE number of people struck by salmonella outbreak at a Spanish hotel has almost doubled.
Health officials in Murcia yesterday said confirmed cases have risen from 100 to 190.
Up to 19 remained in hospital after the outbreak at the four-star Izan Cavanna Hotel in La Manga, southeast Spain, but some were due to be discharged.
Salmonella bacteria was reportedly discovered in food from a meal last Saturday and in samples from staff who handled the ingredients.
The regional ministry of health’s initial investigation into the incident points to cross-contamination.
Experts are continuing to analyse food, surfaces and utensils used. Samples from staff are also still being analysed.
