'Safe' investors reaping benefit of golden years
Daily Express
|December 18, 2024
THIS has been a golden millennium for investors as the precious metal has been the best performing investment over the last quarter of a century.
Gold has beaten shares, bonds, property and cash after rising 1,080% in sterling terms, new analysis by Bullion Vault shows.
This would have turned a investment £10,000 on December 31, 1999 into an impressive £108,000 today.
Gold is seen as a safe haven in times of trouble, and has been popular throughout a turbulent millennium, which includes the dot.com crash, 9/11 terror attacks, financial crisis, global pandemic, Ukraine war and costof-living crisis.
Bullion Vault director of research Adrian Ash said gold had lost its shine at the start of the millennium, so its strong run started from a low base: "More than a billion people in goldloving China and India have been released from poverty, and many bought gold."
