Russian and Chinese hackers' 'embarrassing' breach of UK systems

The security breach was claimed to be so "embarrassing" it was kept secret from the public.

Just last week, the Electoral Commission revealed that tens of millions of voters could have been accessed by hackers in a major breach of its systems.

Russia was thought to be a possible culprit.

A source at GCHQ, the UK's Cheltenham-based electronic the eavesdroppers, said the cyber attackers compromised Foreign Office servers in 2021.

They were able to see details of meetings and emails, but did not access classified information.
