Religion was motivation for Munich attack

AN Afghan asylum seeker who injured at least 36 people by ramming a car into a crowd in Germany said he was motivated by religion.

Police say the driver, named as 24-year-old Farhad N, yelled "Allahu Akbar" after driving a Mini Cooper into a march of around 1,000 striking union members in Munich.

A two-year-old child was left fighting for its life when the car hit a mother pushing a pram.

Senior public prosecutor Gabriele Tilmann said the suspect, who confessed to deliberately driving into the crowd, had an "Islamist orientation" but was not affiliated with any Islamist groups.
