UNDER-THREAT high street post offices can play a key role in rolling out Labour's controversial digital identity cards, according to the business's boss.

- By Giles Sheldrick Chief Reporter

Mr Brocklehurst, 49, declared: "The Post Office has been part of the everyday fabric of British life for almost 400 years. But we cannot afford to stand still.

Neil Brocklehurst said that with question marks hanging over the viability of 11,500 branches the network could not afford to "stand still".

The Post Office chief executive said the ailing outfit has a future in modernising and giving a face-to-face service in an increasingly digital world.

Central to that is being a one-stop shop for processing the Government's digital ID scheme, which is planned to be compulsory by 2029 for people working in the UK.
