The 2,000 people quizzed also said low crime rates, proper health services, reliable public transport, small businesses and a sense of belonging were key to it.

More than two-thirds said a nice community gives them pride a sprucedup front garden is appreciated by a thirdand that they try to do their bit for their neighbourhood.

A fifth do some volunteer work, many up to three times a week, often in charity shops or clearing stray rubbish.
