Owners let holiday homes to dodge council tax hike

HOLIDAY homeowners are escaping punitive double council tax bills by letting out their homes rather than leaving them to stand empty for most of the year.

From April, councils in England and Wales have been free to slap a 100% second-home premium on top of the usual council tax, which effectively doubles the charge, while in parts of Wales councils impose a 200% surcharge.
Three-quarters of councils are set to adopt this charge, leaving second homeowners paying several hundred pounds extra every month.
