ONE of modern Britain’s depressing realities is that far too much power rests with the unaccountable Blob - that self-serving, unaccountable nexus of bureaucrats, policy managers, campaigners, lawyers and trade unionists that controls the higher echelons of the public sector, without regard to justice or the democratic wishes of the people.

A classic example of the Blob’s outrageous dominance arose this week in response to the Government's much-hyped “one in, one out” scheme to deport selected illegal migrants back to France. The country is crying out for action on the deepening problem of people smuggling across the Channel. Yet a High Court judge blocked the very first deportation, that of an Eritrean who at the last minute claimed to be a victim of “modern slavery” in Africa, though he had not mentioned this exploitat
