NHS 'critical incidents' as hospital flu cases surge

HOSPITALS have declared critical incidents as they struggle to cope with surging demand due to viruses and cold weather.
NHS trusts across the country including in Plymouth, Birmingham, Liverpool and Hampshire appealed for patients to go to A&E as a last resort.
The Royal College of Emergency Medicine warned that the flu season was "the straw that is breaking the camel's back".
Dr Adrian Boyle, college president, said: "Our emergency care system is so overwhelmed and fragile that a normal flu season which is what we've got at the moment is creating severe operational difficulties.
"It would be a mistake to think that this is solely a result of winter viruses. We have been chronically overloaded for a number of years.
