Hughes will have Christie showing him way in 100m
A CENTURY on from Harold Abrahams and the Chariots of Fire, British hopes in the men's 100m rest on Zharnel Hughes.
And the national record holder is confident of upsetting the American and Jamaican favourites, despite having just one mediocre race since tearing his hamstring.
Abrahams was the first of three Britons to win the most iconic Olympic title, back in 1924 in Paris.
But the most recent one to achieve the feat, in 1992, is Hughes' inspiration.
An image of Linford Christie celebrating in Barcelona has been his phone screensaver for the past nine months, and he has been regularly seeking advice from his childhood idol.
"I'm aware of the history," said Hughes, who still carries a chip on his shoulder over those calling him. a Plastic Brit because he grew up in Anguilla.
