It comes after sleet and freezing temperatures brought treacherous black ice to many areas.

A school bus “slipped” off a road into a ditch soon after 8am yesterday at Chilmington Green near Ashford in Kent, rescuers said, though fortunately no one was hurt.

Another school coach and bus crashed in Wokingham, Berkshire.

Nine children, eight adult passengers and the coach driver all suffered minor injuries, with two, including one pupil, taken to hospital for further treatment.

South Central Ambulance Service said road conditions were reported to be “very icy” at the scene.

More travel chaos is expected on roads and railways and at airports today as blizzard conditions set in.
