A SELF-CONFESSED "petrolhead", Quentin Willson once said he was intoxicated by the "heady, narcotic cocktail of noise and speed and vrum-vrum" - so much so, that he even named his daughters Mercedes and Mini.

Long before TV viewers saw him revving up on the BBC's Top Gear programme, Willson was an established and hugely popular motoring journalist, consumer champion and campaigner.
He worked as a motoring correspondent for various national newspapers, including writing for the Daily and Sunday Mirror for 15 years.
In later years he unexpectedly embraced alternative technology and became a leading light in the electric vehicle movement.
