At results parties across the US her supporters held their heads in their hands as votes rolled in - for Donald Trump. The Democratic Vice-President gave her concession speech at Howard University in Washington DC last night - where she had hoped to celebrate.

Ms Harris confirmed she had spoken to her Republican rival to congratulate him on his victory. She said: "I know folks are feeling and experiencing a range of emotions right now. I get it.

"[But] we must accept the results of this election."
