So-called “gentle parenting” is the voguish method of bringing up children. But it's one that divides opinion - and could cause terrible tension among parents.

The idea of focusing on a child's needs, rather than disciplining them, was introduced in 2015 by British author and parent Sarah Ockwell-Smith and has been gaining ground ever since. Now you'll find supposed experts talking about active listening and validation, empathy and respect for a child’s autonomy.

On the surface, it sounds great. The approach - emphasising a strong, emotional connection and providing positive reinforcement rather than punishment - lies in stark contrast to the way many of us were brought up, with the emphasis on rules, discipline and control.
