Five years on from Brexit the work is far from done

BREXIT broke Britain free from the feuding and failing European Union. Now we need leaders who will deliver on its promise. The vote to quit the bloc delivered an almighty shock to political elites across the world, demonstrating that British citizens will not surrender their sovereignty to distant technocrats.

People who love their country want to protect it. Brexit won us the opportunity to revive manufacturing, to introduce sensible immigration policies and to make decisions based on our own values and ambitions during a time of radical global change.

Alas, too many politicians and civil servants still wish that governing consisted of copper-plating the diktats of Brussels. Sir Keir Starmer - who argued forcefully for a second referendum as Jeremy Corbyn's shadow Brexit secretary - is hard at work trying to "reset" relations with the EU.

The departure of Boris Johnson from frontline politics meant Britain lost a true believer in the Brexit project.
