Extra cell time for rioters who tried to give jail guards the slip

EIGHT lifers who staged a 10-hour siege at their maximum security prison using shampoo and kettles to keep guards at bay have had time added to their sentences.

The criminals, all caged for murder or conspiracy to kill, flipped when they were ordered back to their cells for lunch at HMP Whitemoor and seized control of a landing.

In scenes reminiscent of Macaulay Culkin's antics as Kevin in Home Alone, they threw shampoo, shower gel and oil on the floor to make it too slippery for officials to reach them.

The eight inmates then barricaded themselves in, using overturned furniture, and fashioned weapons from kettles and broken table legs.
