Bids to stifle freedom of speech in UK universities hurt the 'most vulnerable'

STUDENTS are being silenced on campus, a new freedom-of-speech champion for UK universities claims.

It comes after a survey found one in seven did not feel free to express their views with the most vulnerable losing out, says Professor Arif Ahmed.

He was hired after a new law requires universities, colleges and students' unions in England to ensure freedom of speech on their grounds.

This does not include unlawful content such as harassing others or inciting violence or terrorism.

In his first major speech today Prof Ahmed will say: "Freedom of speech and academic freedom are fundamental to higher education.

"The core mission of universities and colleges is the pursuit of knowledge. Free speech and academic freedom are fundamental to this purpose.
