Battered Britain braced for more chaos
Daily Express
|January 10, 2026
BRITAIN was engulfed in transport chaos yesterday after Storm Goretti brought some of the worst snowfall seen in years.
Roads were blocked, flights and trains were cancelled and some 65,000 homes were left without power in the wake of the “weather bomb”.
And Met Office forecasters warned that the icy blast is not over, with new snow and ice warnings issued for the weekend.
In the coming days, melting snow and rain could also bring further chaos with fears of floods for some parts.
Storm Goretti left a trail of devastation, closing many schools and burying some regions under snow.
The West Midlands was among the worst-hit, with much of Birmingham covered in the heaviest blanket of snow seen in the region for more than a decade.
Birmingham Airport suspended all flights after heavy snowfalls made it unsafe to take off or land.
At least 69 scheduled flights in and out of Heathrow were cancelled yesterday, disrupting more than 9,000 passengers.
More than 65,000 properties were left without power, mostly in the South West but also in the Midlands and Wales, according to the National Grid.
