40,000 homes still left without power

MORE than 40,000 homes in England and Wales were still without power yesterday after Storm Darragh wreaked havoc with 90mph winds and new flood fears.

Two men were killed as the fourth-named storm of the season tore down trees and initially left around 1.5 million customers without power as the National Grid worked round the clock to reconnect homes.

Darragh's heavy downpours also brought fresh alarm, with 33 warnings in England meaning flooding is expected - and 116 alerts, which indicates it is possible. Wales has two warnings and 12 alerts.

Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner said: "We saw two people have lost their lives and there has been major disruption.
