PATIENTS with both malignant and non-malignant haematological conditions in Cheshire will now benefit from local access to the care and expertise of one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, The Christie.

Haematology service joins The Christie

The clinical haematology service at Leighton Hospital in Crewe, part of Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, is now under the responsibility of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.

Patients will still get their routine treatment locally at Leighton Hospital and many of the clinical staff they see will already be familiar faces, including the lead clinician Dr Georgina Talbot.

Dr Talbot will lead a team of experienced consultant haematologists, advanced and specialist nurses, and administrative staff will be based at Leighton Hospital.

The Christie aims to improve the performance of the service, for example, by reducing waiting times for appointments. It also hopes to deliver a better patient experience, including more access to clinical trials.

Patients will be offered outpatient clinics for haematology-oncology and general haematology, chemotherapy treatments through the onsite Macmillan Unit and day case procedures such as blood transfusions through the Planned Admissions Unit.
