WHEN promoting the expansion of solar farms, Dr A Blewett downplays Britain's food insecurity and fails to consider the reality of the farming industry and our food dependency.

- A Spencer, by email

He ignores the fact that the amount of land devoted to agriculture has decreased by approximately 64,000 acres every year over the past two decades. This decline is not only due to solar farms but also road and rail construction e.g. HS2, woodland expansion (more than doubling over the past 20 years), rewilding and property development. With the government's proposal to build 12 new town that will be another 265,000 acres taken out of food production.
