Council blames rising costs for toilets’ closure

TWO sets of public toilets in Newquay have been closed, with the blame being put on the rising cost of running them.
The toilets at Pentire Headland and Chester Road had been shut “for the foreseeable future”, Newquay Town Council announced.
It said the decision followed months of discussion about how to protect and sustain the service in the face of rising costs and vandalism.
At a meeting on October 16 the town council agreed it would close the Pentire Headland toilets due to Cornwall Council choosing to transfer Pentire Headland car park to the Cornish Heritage Trust. It also made the decision to close Chester Road toilets due to low usage.
At other sites the number of cubicles open during winter will be cut, although at least one accessible toilet in the town will be kept open, except when essential repairs are needed.
