His directness reminded me of a lesson from my MBA studies: authentic leadership, the kind rooted in transparency, courage, and moral clarity. We speak of this often in theory. Rarely do we see it practiced so plainly.
Speaking before Parliament and in media interviews, Mkhwanazi refused to sugarcoat the truth. He called out the corrosive role of political meddling in law enforcement operations. He didn’t dodge. He didn’t hedge. He didn’t defer to spin.
That is not only courageous, but also what leadership should look like.
