SUNDAY’S heavy downpour did little to dampen the spirits of sports administrators, past and present, from across the sporting landscape who gathered at a restaurant on Kromboom Road, Crawford, for the launch of veteran softball administrator Noore Nacerodien’s photo book on the 2011 IX ISF Junior Women’s Softball World Championship.
A sometimes-forgotten chapter in Cape Town's post-unification sporting history, the Junior Women’s Softball World Championship, hosted at the nearby Turfhall Sports Complex, followed the euphoria of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, adding to the city’s reputation as one of Africa’s premier hosts of major sporting events.
Unlike the FIFA or Rugby World Cups, however, the softball championship has received little recognition outside softball circles.
A quick online search of major international sporting events hosted in Cape Town often omits the tournament entirely, despite it being an official world championship sanctioned by the International Softball Federation.
The reasons are likely a combination of factors.
