Good news for press freedom in South Africa

A LOOSE description of press freedom is basically journalists going about their business of reporting on all matters, including the politics of the country, in the interest of the public.

Journalists must be able to do this without any interference whatsoever, which includes no threats to their physical and mental safety. In return, their reportage must measure up to the ethics and laws governing the profession, without compromise. The good news for South African media practitioners is that freedom of the press locally is tangible and not a pipe dream.
This was confirmed in the Reporters Without Borders’ 2025 World Press Freedom Index findings that was released in May after a thorough sampling of data from 180 countries.
