Fashion design students immerse in Japanese art and culture

|March 03, 2026
A GROUP of Filipino students recently engaged in a week-long immersion trip in the cities of Kyoto and Osaka to draw inspiration from Japan's rich cultural heritage, traditional craftsmanship, and contemporary fashion innovation.
-
Geared toward the pursuit of global competence, this initiative by the Fashion Design and Merchandising Program of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde sought to promote artistic appreciation and expose learners to interdisciplinary design thinking across different creative domains.
The program opened doors for cultural exchanges between Filipino and Japanese students, professional development opportunities, and worldwide collaborations with partner institutions where they can share best educational practices.
The Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art, which featured an extensive collection spanning both Japanese and Western craftsmanship, familiarized the team with local and global art movements.
The group had the opportunity to witness the latest print works of world-famous avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama. Their itinerary also included partaking in a workshop at the Kyoto Shibori Museum and learning more about the traditional textile craft of Itajime Shibori, a resist dyeing technique.
