PREPARE for the worst but hope for the best.”
-
This age-old wisdom has become the unofficial motto of Filipino consumers and government officials alike as the nation grapples with yet another round of staggering oil price hikes. But as Energy Secretary Sharon Garin rightly acknowledges that “the worst is not yet over,” one cannot help but ask: How many more “worsts” must we prepare for before we finally chart a different course? (Read the Business Mirror story: “Prepare for the worst, DOE counsels public,” March 11, 2026).
The numbers are sobering. Gasoline prices have jumped by as much as P13 per liter, diesel by P24.25, and kerosene by a devastating P38.50. Secretary Garin’s approach is pragmatic and commendable. Urging oil companies to order imports early and diversifying sources to include Canada, Brazil, India, and Australia demonstrates proactive governance. Her assurance that fuel rationing remains off the table—for now—provides some measure of relief.
