When it comes to protecting newly qualified drivers we've failed our test

NEVER drive faster than your guardian angel can fly.' It's a slightly crass quote, and one I came across the other day, but there is some truth in it, particularly here in 2025 when our roads are busier than ever.

When it comes to protecting newly qualified drivers we've failed our test

I recently unearthed some old photos of the street in which I grew up.

Taken in the late 1970s, I was struck by how few cars there were in the shot; the kerbside was almost empty.

Great news, as I remember, for us kids who played out - not so much for the neighbours craving a bit of peace and quiet.

The fact is more people than ever have a vehicle these days - two and three-car households are not uncommon.

That means the roads are rammed and more accidents occur. And more deaths.

So on the face of it, the government's planned overhaul of driving laws, announced this week, has to be a good thing.

The proposals include measures to ban motorists over 70 from driving if they fail compulsory eye tests.
