ENGLAND off-spinner Shoaib Bashir has joined Derbyshire on a two-year deal following the expiry of his contract at Somerset.

England off-spinner Shoaib Bashir, who has joined Derbyshire

Despite being England’s only frontline spinner in their Ashes touring party, Bashir was unused in their 4-1 defeat, with all-rounder Will Jacks instead preferred to bolster the batting.

It was a position Bashir had grown accustomed to at Taunton as, despite being England’s first choice in the Test team until the trip to Australia, he was below slow left-armer Jack Leach in the Somerset pecking order.

The emergence of off spinning all-rounder Archie Vaughan at Somerset also led to Bashir having brief loan spells with Worcestershire and Glamorgan in a bid to get some first-team action under his belt.
