Pothole-addled roads in Staffordshire given a damning 'amber' rating

|January 13, 2026
STAFFORDSHIRE'S pothole-riddled roads have been given a damning verdict in a new traffic light ratings system.
Drivers across England can now see how well their local highway authority is tackling what the government has called the 'pothole plague' after the government released a map ranking how well each council is dealing with road maintenance.
All 154 local highway authorities have been given a red, amber or green score based on current road conditions and how effectively they are spending government funding to fix defects and invest in long-term measures to maintain roads.
Both Staffordshire County Council and Stoke-on-Trent City Council ranked as 'amber' - along with 124 others in England.
Breaking down its ranking, Staffordshire was 'green' in the spend scorecard category and 'amber' in the condition scorecard and best practice categories. Stoke-on-Trent was handed the same ratings.
