Former Derby boss Newman dies, aged 91

FORMER Derby County manager John Newman has died, aged 91.

John Newman at Raynesway in 1979 when he was Derby County assistant manager to boss Colin Addison, who died last month.

After proving himself in the lower divisions with Exeter City and Grimsby Town, Newman joined the Rams as Colin Addison's assistant and succeeded him in January 1982, although only on a temporary, untitled basis until March.

His immediate task after taking over from Addison was to keep the Rams in the Second Division.

He brought back Charlie George, signed Brian Attley and John McAlle and achieved his objective.

When Mike Watterson took over the club, it was obvious that Newman's days were numbered.

He was dismissed in November 1982.
