Pinch points Council brings in new rules to allow it to move on problem pedlars

SERIOUS safety concerns over pedlars have sparked action to restrict them from blocking busy paths.

Traders often set up stalls selling trinkets and other items at popular events such as the Harbour Festival, but last year some refused to move when they were told they were blocking a footbridge.

This has led Bristol City Council to draw up orders blocking pedlars from operating in certain locations. Busy events with several thousands of people often have detailed plans to manage crowds, and narrow routes need to be kept clear.

Two public space protection orders were signed off by councillors on the public health and communities policy committee on Friday, June 27. These will cover Ashton Gate and the Harbourside, to prevent future problems at common pinch points.

Patsy Mellor, director of management of place, said: "This is in response to serious safety concerns raised in 2024 where pedlars positioned themselves in areas that caused event management issues-such as at either end of Pero's Bridge, or in Ashton Gate on the footpath forcing pedestrians into the road so they were able to pass.
