Gurney stone?
Bristol Post

'M giving up on the picture on this page.
-
Its date is unknown (1940s? 50s?) and the only information we have is that it shows “The gurney stone, College Green.”The only mentions I can find of any such thing in old copies of the Post and other papers are equally mystified. The picture last appeared in the paper in 1991 when my esteemed predecessor, Mr David Harrison, appealed to readers for information and doesn’t seem to have had any replies.
A brief diary article in the paper from 1949 tells us that “in an alleyway leading to the Gurney Memorial Hall, beside the former St George’s, Brandon Hill, Infant School, there stands a steppingstone or stile such as is commonly used in a hedge-gap, with a short pillar on either side, each surmounted by what appears to be a gargoyle of considerable antiquity.
“Locally they are known as the Gurney Stones.”
