Which was a great pity because had she afforded me the courtesy of an opportunity to respond she would have been informed that (a) I didn't need permission to pick roadside blackberries; (b) she really should acquaint herself with the law before setting herself up as some kind of amateur arbiter; and (c) it was nothing to do with her whether I did or didn't and she should proceed with the fullest dispatch on her chosen course. If you get my meaning.

Odd, isn't it, that in a world where retailers can turn a decent penny flogging the gullible, newly arrived country-dwellers all the (overpriced, unnecessary) kit they need for foraging, the sight of someone actually doing it can occasion such an intervention.
