'Heroes Return' conjures up a royal 'ghost'

A few friends are off to India for sunshine on Goa's exotic beaches.

It reminded me of our South Asia trip, years ago, to Sri Lanka. It was with my imposing late mother-in-law Wynne, who accidentally created an historic public sensation there.

We were partly funded by the Heroes Return scheme, which assists former service personnel and spouses back to where they'd served in wartime. Wynne's late husband Jack was in the Intelligence Corps there with Louis Mountbatten, against the Japanese. But by the end of our visit, Wynne became the embodiment of a war hero herself.
