Birmingham Mail

September 25, 2025

A STUDY carried out by a team including Birmingham medics has discovered how a cell-based vaccine can slow down progression of cancer.

- GURDIP THANDI Local Democracy Reporter

The ImmunoTACE trial showed people with intermediate stage primary liver cancer had longer periods when their disease did not grow or spread after receiving a vaccine made from their own immune cells.

It's the first clinical trial of its kind to test patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) - the most common form of liver cancer, with 3,600 new cases diagnosed every year in the UK.

The vaccine was given with treatment to block the blood vessels feeding the tumour, and chemotherapy.
