CHRISTO voskrese! Voistinu voskrese! (Christ is risen! Truly He is risen!) There is a story told about Nikolai Bukharin, a Russian Communist leader who vigorously propagated the message of atheism.

In 1930 this powerful Bolshevick leader addressed a large crowd of workers in Kiev, his speech set against the backdrop of the state's purge of religion, imprisoning religious leaders and razing churches and synagogues to the ground. Bukharin aimed the heavy artillery of his arguments at Christianity, hurling insults and supposed proofs against it. When he finally finished his speech, there was silence. Looking out smugly upon what he thought were the ashes of the crowd's faith, he demanded, "Are there any questions?"
