Jay: I enjoyed winging it in League One for Blues

JAY Stansfield has admitted he enjoyed playing wide for Birmingham City in League One - even if it was detrimental to his goals tally.

- By ALEX DICKEN

Chris Davies shifted Stansfield out to the left-wing at times in Blues’ record-breaking season to accommodate Alfie May.

There is no denying Stansfield’s numbers were better when he played through the middle, but the space he was afforded out wide made it an enjoyable experience.

Asked for his main ‘learning’ from the season, Stansfield said: “Learning how to play different positions. When I came here for Fulham I played left-wing and you can get the ball more.

“It’s tough to compare, when you're playing League One we were the team that everyone wanted to beat so teams were putting 10 men behind the ball and you get two big centre-halves mark you and all they want to do is kick you.

“That's football in League One.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s great football to play in but the type of player I am, I thrive off space in behind, getting past people, and playing on the wing gave me that freedom to show my qualities and get at people.”
