RELIEF AS SAFARI PARK WELCOMES BABY ENDANGERED RHINO AFTER DIFFICULT BIRTH

AN adorable baby rhino has been born at West Midlands Safari Park.

The rare Indian rhinoceros calf arrived at 4.32pm on May 6 to firsttime mum Sunanda.

The female calf, which is yet to be named, marks only the second successful Indian rhino birth at the Bewdley park in its 52-year history.

Despite a difficult birth when the calf breeched, keepers say the pair are now doing well.

Veterinary nurse Sarah Smith said: "Sunanda didn't follow all of the usual steps during the weeks leading up to the birth, but our experienced team were able to spot the initial signs of labour during the night.

"A breech birth brings many difficulties, and research shows a large number require intervention and usually end in calf mortality.
