'City of sanctuary' – but other areas must play their part

ONE of the known hotels housing asylum seekers is in Walmley, Sutton Coldfield, where some local people have been protesting for it to shut down.

The residents of the hotel, formerly the iconic 'home' of TV soap Crossroads, are mostly awaiting decisions on their applications to remain in the UK, are unable to work and are living off limited handouts.

Refugee charities say the fault for delays and the living conditions is not the fault of those seeking asylum yet they are bearing the brunt of protests. They also point out that none of those seeking asylum are 'illegal' as they have a right to do so, and highlight the shocking circumstances that many of those seeking refuge are fleeing, including war, torture, famine and discrimination.

Birmingham is an official 'city of sanctuary' and has a reputation as a place of welcome to those fleeing their home countries.
