The Royal Thai Navy has rejected reports that it has launched operations to seize the Cambodian islands of Koh Kong and Koh Yor, clarifying that recent naval activity in the Gulf of Thailand is solely aimed at safeguarding national security amid rising tensions with the neighbouring country.

Adm Thadawut Thatphithakkul, chief of staff of the navy and secretary-general of the Thai Maritime Enforcement Coordinating Centre (Thai-MECC), yesterday said that the navy has no intention of occupying any Cambodian territory.

"Our operations are conducted strictly to ensure safety. There is absolutely no objective to seize Koh Kong or Koh Yor," he said. "However, any activity that poses a threat to Thai personnel or civilians will be neutralised in accordance with our mandate."
