Thailand says Hindu statue removal is security-related

Thailand has denied that its removal of a Hindu statue erected by Cambodian troops in a disputed border area was a mark of religious disrespect, amid a growing outcry from Indians as well as Cambodians.

The Cambodian-built statue in the Chong An Ma area of Ubon Ratchathani province was unregistered and was taken down for security reasons, the Joint Press Center on the Thailand-Cambodia Border Situation said in a statement yesterday.

"The actions taken to remove said structure were not motivated by religion, belief or any intent to disrespect sacred symbols or any faith," the statement said.

"The operation was carried out solely as part of area administration and security management, following the restoration of control over Thai territory."
