Online complaints surge by 20% as threats spread

Bangkok Post

The Electronic Transactions Development Agency (Etda) has reported a sharp rise in online complaints during the first eight months of 2025, with more than 27,000 cases filed, an increase of 20.1% year-on-year.

The surge reflects growing public concern over digital threats, particularly as online platforms become more accessible and fraudsters exploit technological loopholes, in particular artificial intelligence deepfakes.

Chaichana Mitrpant, executive director of Etda, said complaints declined in previous years — 45,181 in 2023 and 35,358 in 2024 — but the recent uptick underscores the evolving nature of online scams.

These include deepfake impersonations, deceptive investment platforms, fake job offers, and fraudulent loan schemes that demand upfront fees without delivering funds.
