Low turnout after poll boycott

Voting ended on Saturday in Ivory Coast's parliamentary elections, apoll marked by low turnout following a boycott call by opposition parties.

The vote came two months after President Alassane Ouattara, 83, won a presidential election that extended his 14-year rule.
In Abidjan’s Yopougon and Plateau districts, fewer than 100 people voted from electoral rolls listing about 400 voters at several polling stations, AFP journalists observed.
The Independent Electoral Commission (CEI) said early yesterday the provisional turnout stood at 32.35%, down from 37.88% in the 2021 legislative elections.
More than eight million voters were registered to elect members of the National Assembly, where lawmakers from the ruling party currently hold a majority.
Elections in Ivory Coast are often accompanied by political tensions or violence.
More than 40,000 security personnel deployed during the late-October presidential election remained on duty for Saturday's polls.
