Court asked to rule on ballot barcodes

The Ombudsman has resolved to petition the Constitutional Court to rule on whether the use of barcodes and QR codes on ballot papers in the Feb 8 general election violated the constitutional requirement that voting be conducted directly and by secret ballot.
The move followed complaints the system could allow voters' identities and choices to be traced, potentially undermining the secrecy of the vote.
The Office of the Ombudsman on Friday said it had received 21 complaints from citizens asking the body to submit a petition to the court under Section 213 of the constitution.
The Ombudsman said a meeting was held on Tuesday to examine the facts.
