ASHBOURNE Animal Welfare's rescue and rehoming centre, The Ark on Wyaston Road, is holding a Spring Open Day on Sunday, April 27, between 11am and 4pm and looking forward to welcoming lots of visitors.

There will be the opportunity to say hello to some of the current residents in the kennels and cattery and visitors can enjoy hot and cold snacks and homemade cakes.

The shop will be open selling a wide range of goods including textiles, stationery, china and collectibles with all money raised going to help the cats and dogs in care.

The outside sales areas will also be open offering books, toys, bric a brac and cat and dog accessories.

The Ark is as busy as ever and is always full, with a waiting list of cats and dogs to come into care.

Kitten season has certainly started early this year with so far six cats and their litters in residence (five of which were born at The Ark).

Of these mums four were found as strays, heavily pregnant and they were lucky to be found by Good Samaritans who contacted the charity for help.

Some of the kittens are shown here, although at present most are too young to be adopted.

At the other end of the age scale Willow, a lovely semi long haired grey cat is 14 years of age and was brought into the safety of The Ark along with Theo, an 11 year old dog, when their owner could no longer care for them.

Willow was not in the best of condition, with a badly matted coat and underweight. She has been undergoing health checks with the charity vet and is looking and feeling much better. She is now on a good diet and is proving to be a

very friendly old girl who would like to find a loving retirement home for the rest of her days.
