At IIT-Gn, PhD scholars forced to share cramped rooms

They claim there is barely enough space for 2 beds and they do not get even basic study setup

The December 2024 PhD batch at Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar is facing an unusual housing crisis. IIT-Gn, typically known for its student-friendly accommodation, now faces backlash from doctoral students. These scholars, initially promised single occupancy rooms, must now double up in tiny spaces designed for one person, hampering their academic work.

The institute has hiked hostel fees to Rs 6,000 per student—among the highest across IITs. Yet students claim they're "being denied humane living conditions and forced to share rooms in a way that is both impractical and undignified."
