Roeder changed me, says Sarll

I AIM TO MAKE GLENN PROUD OF MY PROJECT IN THE NORTH

HARTLEPOOL United manager Darren Sarll is desperate to impress – with words from late mentor Glenn Roeder still ringing in his ears.

Sarll has arrived at the Suit Direct Stadium having never managed further north than Stevenage before.

And the Hertfordshire-born boss, who carried the coffin at Roeder’s funeral following his death in 2021, is drawing on his memories of the former Newcastle captain and manager to help him achieve success in the north-east.

Roeder – originally from Essex before playing, coaching and managing spells with the Magpies – was advisor to Sarll during a near two-year spell at Stevenage between 2016-18.

And the Pools manager, who has taken charge of his first pre-season week at his new club, said: “Glenn Roeder said to me ‘winning in the north-east is the best feeling in the world and that losing in the northeast is the worst feeling in the world’.

“I guess I’m about to find out what those feel like!

“Glenn was an incredible person, with a huge amount of resilience and I’d like to think that is one of the things I have got from him.
