As Apple says goodbye to CEO Tim Cook (below, right, affectionately known as Tim Apple by President Donald Trump), its senior vice president of hardware engineering, John Ternus, is stepping up at a crucial time.

During Cook's 15 years at the helm of the tech giant, Apple expanded its digital footprint-launching Apple Music and Apple TV-and cozying up to Trump. But with Ternus' new promotion, Apple seems primed to return to its hardware roots.
Ternus, below left, joined the company's product design team in 2001, where he helped lead the teams behind the products you're most addicted to: the iPhone, MacBook, Apple Watch, iPad and AirPods.
